Wednesday 16th May 2012

Stop Press ... Wednesday, 16th May, 2012. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, after hearing of the splendid job which the men of GWS YORKS & LANCASTERS ('the Young and Lovelies') made of the Accrington Pals Memorial Service in February this year, requested their presence at her Diamond Jubilee visit to East Lancashire in ACCRINGTON today. Her Majesty made the formal request to either meet, or see, our chaps - badged as ACCRINGTON PALS - through the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire. Sgt. Owen POWELL, Cpl. Scott KNOWLES and Ptes. Craig FINCH, Jon COLLINSON and Frank ELLIOTT carried off the task with aplomb, apparently to the approval of Her Majesty and HRH Prince Phillip. As a result of our professionalism, many photo opportunities were had and the hearts and minds of the good people of ACCRINGTON where won over, helping cement the memory of the men and boys of the original ACCRINGTON PALS who fell on 1st July, 1916.

Members of the The Great War Society will be undertaking a sponsored march - in full Great War kit - between Wednesday 25th & Saturday 28th April, 2012. The march, which starts out in Whitehall, LONDON & finishes in YPRES, is an official fundraising event in partnership with 'Help for Heroes', to raise money for this services charity. 'WHITEHALL TO WIPERS' also reflects the GWS ethos of providing the public with a living link between the sacrifices made by the British troops of the Great War, & those being made by our forces today. Donations can be made in this very worthy enterprise by the Great War Society, by using a mobile telephone - simply text the word, 'MARCH' to 70900. Each text will make a £5.00 donation to 'WHITEHALL TO WIPERS'.
